CALL TO ACTION: Bills heading to a floor vote this week!
CALL TO ACTION: Bills to a floor vote this week!
Twelve of our priority bills have passed all the required committee hearings in their house of origin and are heading to a floor vote! A floor vote means your representative will be voting on these bills this week. These bills must pass the first house by June 1, 2018, or they will be dead for this legislative session.
Call your Senator or Assemblymember and ask that they support these bills when they show up for a floor vote. June 1st is this Friday, so call today!
There’s no need to call the authors and co-authors!
It is especially important to call your representative if they voted against the bill in committee. We’ve included committee votes in the list below. We consider not voting (“No Vote Recorded”) to be as bad as, or worse than, a “No” vote. If your representative did vote against a bill, be clear when you call that you know and that you want a “Yes” vote on the floor. You could also ask why they voted against the bill.
Don’t assume that if a legislator voted for a bill in committee that they will vote the same way on the floor – the bill may have been amended since the committee vote in such a way that they no longer support it.
Here are some suggestions for personalizing your call, depending on your representative’s voting record in committee.
If your representative voted for the bill in a committee:
I would like to thank [Senator / Assemblymember] [Name] for their vote for [Bill Number] in the [Senate / Assembly] [Committee Name] and ask that they continue to support the bill when it reaches the [Senate / Assembly] floor by voting aye.
If your representative voted against, or did not vote for, the bill in a committee:
I notice that [Senator / Assemblymember] voted against [Bill Number] in the [Senate / Assembly] [Committee Name] but ask that they reconsider their vote and support the bill when it reaches the [Senate / Assembly] floorby voting aye
If the staffer says that the Senator/Assemblymember did not vote for the bill in committee you could say that not voting is an abdication of the legislator’s responsibilities and duties as an elected representative of their constituents.
So, look up your California Senator and Assemblymember on our website and start calling!
